Inaugural Golf Tournament Sells Out; Raises More Than $64,000 for Military Families

June 27, 2017

United Through Reading and our friends at Support The Enlisted Project cannot thank you enough for the amount of generosity we experienced this past weekend at our inaugural joint golf tournament this past Friday, June 23rd — which was a sold out event! We were able to raise more than $64,000 to support our military families both home and abroad as they face challenges both financially and in retaining the family bond.

Golfer, Cathryn Spetter, had the following to say, “Today was a perfect example of the whole being greater than the sum of two parts. The combined efforts and resources of both organizations made for a great day and a successful fundraiser.”

Tony Teravaninen, Mike Dowling, Dr. Sally Ann Zoll, and Dave Schnell on the golf course!

The tournament featured a shotgun/scramble format, and included a number of standard proxy events, such as longest drive, nearest the pin, and also sold mulligan packages that include two mulligans as well as a co-branded hat thanks to a deep discount from Puma. After a round of golf, everyone enjoyed a Mexican feast, silent auction, and live auction. The live auction offered high-end prize packages including a stay in Mammoth, La Quinta, and Rosarito Beach in Mexico as well a 2-3 hour Traveling Golf Simulator Experience courtesy of Street Swings.  Congratulations to the winning foursome: Steve Connor, Ed Quinby, Danny Davis & Matt Ludvik.

Dwayne Junker and Ken Garber, Golf Tournament Chairs and past Board Charis of UTR and STEP, respectively, ready to hit the course!

STEP and UTR’s Chief Executive Officers, Tony Teravainen and Sally Ann Zoll,  had an opportunity to refresh and connect with golfers as they rode around the course distributing beverages. “The overwhelming support displayed by the wonderful people of San Diego in making this dual-charity golf tournament a resounding success is a testament to the strong connection our community holds with our military and their families,” shared Zoll.

The evening’s program also featured an award presentation to the tournament winners, 1st Place: Stephen Connor, Danny Davis, Matthew Ludvik and Edward Quinby; 2nd Place: Bill Krebs, Steve Liberko, Mark Sliber and Craig Wood; and 3rd Place: Ryan Smith, Greg Walt, Kris Williams, Matthew Holder.  It also included recognition of the event’s sponsors, 19th Hole Sponsor – IOMAXIS, Course Marshal Sponsor – CynergisTek, Eagle Sponsors – PM Tec. Inc, Swinerton Builders, Birdie Sponsors – KES, Umpqua Bank, and Tee Sponsors – Bank of America / Merrill Lynch, MGO Certified Public Accountants, Workshop for Warriors, USS Midway Foundation, HundredX, Booz Allen Hamilton, North Island Credit Union, Sentek Global, and Magee Enterprises.
