The important work of UTR is made possible by people like you who contribute their unique backgrounds, talents, and skill levels. Our needs change based on current events, adding flexibility to get you involved in an area that inspires you the most!

Help Us Send Home More Bedtime Stories!

Program Advocate

Supporters of our program who live or work within a military community identify locations that would benefit from the UTR program and work with a UTR Program Manager to publicize the program and assist as needed. The Program Advocate is the eyes and ears of our program in the field.

Children’s Books Reviewer

Do you like to read children’s books? We’d love for you to read them with a purpose and write book reviews. This position is perfect for reading specialists, librarians, or others who can evaluate books for ease of reading aloud, word content and diversity, age appropriateness, etc.

Recording Booth Operator

We often have opportunities to bring a “pop-up studio” to a location where service members can make recordings. At these events, our volunteers help the service members make their videos and select books appropriate for the children receiving the video. These volunteers capture the special moments that are sent home to family.

Assist with Fundraising Efforts

Special Events

Support fundraising and special events by collecting auction items or helping at registration, set-up, clean-up or more.

Thank a Donor

Make calls or send handwritten letters to thank UTR financial donors.

Grant Researching/Writing

Assist the fundraising team as they research, write, and execute grants.

Use Your Communications Skills

Speakers

Provide presentations about UTR in your community.

Writers

Our team of writers develop blogs and articles. The topics range from early childhood literacy to maintaining connections with loved ones serving our country, and many topics in between. Our volunteer writers bring their own ideas and create their own content based on topics suggested by UTR staff.

Photographers

Help photograph volunteer and special events and military families sharing their testimonials. Photos will be used on UTR’s website, collateral materials, and social media channels. Professional photography experience is not required, though a passion for photography is encouraged.

Mobile Story Station (San Diego only)

The Mobile Story Station is a “pop-up studio” that we will bring to locations and special events in the greater San Diego area frequented by military families. Inside the Mobile Story Station is a recording studio where service members can make recordings. Note: someone can volunteer as both the operator and driver for smaller events.

Mobile Story Station Operator

Help service members create their videos and select books appropriate for the children receiving the video. The operator will capture the special moments that are sent home to family and encourage people to participate.

Mobile Story Station Driver

Drive the Mobile Story Station to various events in the greater San Diego area. A valid driver license is required. Insurance is provided. The driver is responsible for picking up and returning the Mobile Story Station to its permanent parking location.
