You have added “making a storybook recording” to your vast checklist before an upcoming separation from your family. Regardless of if you are heading out on a month long training exercise, a year long deployment, or simply a temporary duty assignment that keeps you away for just a few days, maintaining that daily bedtime routine can feel impossible.

United Through Reading is here for you! No matter what the length or distance of your separation, you can record a storybook for that special child in your life. They are then able to watch your familiar face and hear your voice whenever they need it most. Here are a few tips for making your first recording the most impactful:

Tip #1 : Record the “comfort book” and don’t hold back!

Many children have a certain book that parents and caregivers have likely read to them many, many times. This is the book that a child has memorized so well that if you were to skip a page, your child would most certainly call you out on it. Recording this book first is ideal because you are already familiar with the book. You know every plot twist, suspenseful pause, and silly character voice by heart. Go all out with this book! Deliver the over the top pirate accent, make all of the animal squeaks and sounds. The more dramatic you get, the more your child will feel like you are right there in the room, connecting over this much loved book.

Tip #2 : Expecting a new baby? Document it!

Are you welcoming a new addition soon? Don’t wait until that bundle of joy arrives to hit record! Science tells us that after 23 weeks of gestation, babies are able to hear your voice. Recording a book now builds your bond with them and doubles as a timeless keepsake. Years from now you can show your child the video and let them know you were reading to them long before you actually met them!

Tip #3 : Introducing a new book? Study first!

Venturing into unread territory? Give the book you have selected a quick read before you hit record. This way you are familiar with the characters, able to tackle any tongue twisters OR ten syllable dinosaur names that might be in your path. Prereading will give you the ability to decide on funny voices, what the plot twists are and will make sure you aren’t caught off guard mid recording.

Tip #4 : Start with an intro

When you hit record, you don’t have to dive straight into your storybook adventure. Treat those first moments like your own personal video message. Say hello, blow them kisses or share a joke! You can use this time to remind them of upcoming events or even sneaky suggestions like “don’t forget to eat your veggies.” Taking these few moments lets your child know that this recording is just for them.

Overall, HAVE FUN! This recording is a connection to your child while you are away. It is a memento they can use to bond with you for years to come. No matter where your service takes you, your voice is a powerful comfort for your child. So, get started today! Download the United Through Reading app, pick out a storybook and unleash your best character voices to make your first recording.
