One Book. One Mission. One Community.

Sometimes Apart Always in My Heart: Helping military families send love from far away

Each year, United Through Reading brings the military community together through the power of storytelling.

Our Book for the Military Child initiative unites military parents, caregivers, and children around a shared reading experience. Our goal is to celebrate the courage and resilience of military kids worldwide by uplifting them and acknowledging that they serve, too.

For 2025, we invite you to join us in reading Sometimes Apart Always in My Heart: Helping military families send love from far away, a story that reflects military kids' unique experiences and resilience. With 13,000 copies distributed across military bases, libraries, and events, this initiative ensures that every child can feel seen, heard, and connected, no matter where they are in the world.

Tish Rabe writing process

Tish Rabe, Author

"The minute I contacted United Through Reading, I knew I had found the perfect partner to write a book for kids. I wanted to write a book that reflects what happens within military families. Military children are serving our country just as much as their parents. These kids are our youngest warriors!

People often think writing children's books is easy, but I can share with you that Sometimes Apart Always in My Heart took over two years for United Through Reading and Tish Rabe Books to create. By the time it was finished, we had worked on 58 versions!"

Military kids face unique experiences like frequent relocations, a parent often away for long periods and emotional and academic challenges. These kids exhibit bravery every single day!

Sometimes Apart, Always in My Heart is dedicated to all the brave service members who sacrifice so much to defend and protect our freedom and the children waiting for them to come home.

Written in rhyme by bestselling children's author Tish Rabe and featuring hand-painted illustrations by award-winning artist Gill Guile, the book introduces the Bear Family. When Daddy Bear is away on a military assignment, he wants his family to know he is always thinking about them.

This heartwarming story will help every family know what it means to count the days until they are all together again.
