Each year United Through Reading ships boxes of holiday-themed children's books to program sites around the world. Service members love to read these classic holiday stories on video and send the books home with the videos. In this simple way, service members are present with their families. 

“This past holiday was tough. It was our third year in a row not having Rex with us so we were feeling pretty down. When I had the kids write their Santa letters, the only thing they put on their list was for Daddy to be home. I had to tell them Daddy couldn’t be here so they would have to come up with other ideas.

The day after Christmas we walked down the street to check the mail. We saw a small package with the postmark from the USS Dewey. As soon as the kids saw the United Through Reading sticker they took off running for the house to watch Daddy read to them.

They were piled up on the floor watching their dad with big smiles, and our six-year-old turned around with the happiest look on her face and said ‘We got Daddy for Christmas!’ The one thing the kids wanted more than anything for the holidays I could not give them, but United Through Reading did.”
