Carter’s Charitable Foundation’s Commitment to Military Children
April 15, 2021
Carter’s Charitable Foundation is helping hundreds of military children continue to share storytime with the service members they love through their support of six United Through Reading Story Stations and attendance at MilSpouseFest.
The six Story Stations are located around the world, including at Fort Benning, GA; Stuttgart, Germany; Naval Support Activity Bahrain; Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, HI; Fort Hood, TX; and Norfolk, VA. These story stations so far have made over 300 recordings!
That’s 300 storytimes that military children did not miss and 300 routines that remained the same. For those families, communication lines remained open, and a love of reading was fostered. Many of these recordings were made during times of deployment, and for the service members and the children in their lives, it maintained their familial bond despite the distance between them.
Carter’s also helped United Through Reading attend six virtual MilSpouseFest events in the fall of 2020. United Through Reading staff loved sharing the App with the 2,500 military spouse attendees and hearing stories about how their families used United Through Reading to remain connected and share storytime.
Many attendees had never heard of United Through Reading before and quickly downloaded the App to get their family started recording stories in preparation for their next separation. One spouse said, “I’m excited to use the app to make video recording stories more streamlined.”
Others were long-time UTR families and told us, “Thank you for all you do and (the) program. My family loves this program.”
We were thrilled to be able to give attendees Carter’s gift certificates to help purchase clothes and goodies for their families. Who can resist a pair of their pajamas after all? And don’t get me started on coordinating pieces in different children’s sizes for family photos and homecomings! We also gave away books for their families to start using our App right away!
Children are at the heart of everything Carter’s does – from high-quality clothing to ensuring that children are nurtured and protected. Their community partnership with United Through Reading means that service members don’t have to miss out on daily reading and storytime with their loved ones. Children can see and hear their military parents read stories to them no matter the distance separating them! We couldn’t do this critical work in the military community without investing partners like Carter’s Charitable Foundation.
