Happy Month of the Military Child!
Every April, we celebrate the Month of the Military Child — a time to cheer for the amazing kids behind the uniform. Military life can ask a lot of kids. Frequent moves, switching schools, saying goodbye to beloved friends and communities, and adjusting to new routines— and often on repeat. They deal with separation from loved ones and all the emotional and practical impacts that come with that. So, when we say military kids are heroes, we really mean it.
Across the country and around the globe, more than 1.4 million military-connected kids are navigating life with extra strength and heart. From toddlers to teens, they serve alongside their families every day. With courage and resilience, military kids embrace life in ways that many adults could learn from.
At United Through Reading (UTR), we are honored to support military kids every day. We understand that military life can sometimes make connection challenging—and that connection is a cornerstone of strong, healthy families and confident, thriving children. Through our free video-recorded storytime app, we give service members, National Guard members, and veterans a way to stay connected with the children in their lives. For children, these recordings offer the comfort of seeing and hearing their loved ones share stories—whenever they need it, as often as they want.
Since 2023, UTR has selected a Book for the Military Child that brings families together through a shared reading experience. This program celebrates the courage and resilience of military children worldwide and reminds them that they serve, too.
We are proud to announce that our 2026 Book for the Military Child, Home Moves With Me, launches today. Written by Kathy Feedham Raggio, illustrated by Quinette Cook, and published by Elva Resa, the book explores the meaning of home and the strength of carrying it with you wherever you go. The book is also available in Spanish, translated by Gabriella Aldeman. [Learn more here.]
Join us in sending a heart-felt thank you to every military child, this month and every month. We see you and are so grateful for your service. Thank you for your courage and flexibility, your capacity to embrace change (and life!), and for always being there for your families.
