Literacy is at the heart of United Through Reading’s mission. We have always valued the early literacy education of military children through the read-aloud experience.

In support of International Literacy Day today, September 8, United Through Reading is releasing a literacy focused white paper — Nurturing Literacy Skills for Children in Military Families through the Read-Aloud Experience. This paper explores childhood literacy issues, including struggles specific to military children, and the benefits of the read-aloud experience.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:
  • By using United Through Reading, military families are guaranteed special and uninterrupted reading time with their service member that can be viewed again and again.
  • United Through Reading helps military families maintain the important tradition of reading time in challenging circumstances so military children will enter school with reading readiness and prepared to learn.
  • Using United Through Reading offers many literacy benefits to a military child:
    • Academic and emotional benefits
    • Promotes emergent literacy and language development
    • Encourages child to become a frequent reader
    • Builds the relationship between parent and child
    • Ignites a lifelong love for reading

We invite you to read the white paper here.
