Join United Through Reading in celebrating Read Across America
February 28, 2014
United Through Reading is pleased to be a partner in the National Education Association’s Read Across America Day on March 3, 2014 – the nation’s largest reading event, occurring each year in celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.
United Through Reading locations around the globe, including select USO sites, are poised to kick off the Seussical celebration so that separated military parents can send Dr. Seuss recordings to their loved ones at home. Uniform covers are sure to be replaced by a Cat in the Hat hat while military moms and dads read beloved titles such as, The Foot Book, Hop on Pop, I Can Read with My Eyes Shut! and Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? (complete with “Moos” and “Cock A Doodle Doos,” we hope)!
If you are a United Through Reading coordinator looking for ideas to make your location’s celebration extra special, here are a few ideas:
- Conduct a read-a-thon and ask participants to sign up to read on March 3 (or a day of your choice). Last year, FOB Farah, Afghanistan held a United Through Reading read-a-thon, and twenty service members signed up that day to record stories to send home! They even pre-coordinated with a CONUS elementary school so that service members who were willing to read but didn’t have children of their own could send a story to a child at that school. Imagine that child’s delight at receiving a story from a hero halfway around the world!
- Don’t forget that nieces, nephews, grandchildren and younger brothers and sisters enjoy story time, too. In fact, we’ve even heard of service members sending a recording to their parents waiting proudly at home! Encourage everyone to participate and send a story to someone special.
- Share your United Through Reading Read Across America experience with us on Facebook. We’d love to see photos and hear stories of your Seussical celebrations!
