Reading Ready Kits Distributed Across San Diego

July 10, 2023

This year United Through Reading is partnering with all 20 San Diego Child Development Centers (CDC) to bring Reading Ready Kits to each military child enrolled. The 3,610 kits will include an age-appropriate children’s book, family literacy activities, information on the benefits of a read aloud routine, and how families can use United Through Reading to save storytime moments all in a reusable, Operation Storytime branded bag. The project is supported by The Parker Foundation, The Johanna Anderson Trueblood Foundation, The Kelley Family Trust, and the Rush Family.

“Every child enrolled in the CDC (ages 0-5) will experience during their lifetime, a deployment of a parent (sometimes both), multiple moves, new schools, saying good-bye to friends and making new ones. Being able to prepare these children for the challenges of military life is key to resilient, healthy and strong military families,” said Lily Carlton, Director of Maritime Programs.

As part of the project, the United Through Reading Mobile Story Station and our staff will visit each of the CDC childcare locations across San Diego, from Coronado to Camp Pendleton. The visits will further introduce the families to United Through Reading and how our programs help them create valuable daily reading routines at home.
