July 15, 2019

SAN DIEGO — United Through Reading and Support The Enlisted Project hosted their third annual joint golf tournament, ‘Swing for our Heroes’, on Friday, June 28th at Admiral Baker Golf Course. Together they were able to raise more than $63,000 to support military families facing financial challenges (STEP) and staying connected with storytime during times of separation (UTR).

“It’s always a great day when we can support our military families alongside our partners at STEP,” said Kara Dallman, Senior Director of Development and Strategic Alliances for United Through Reading. “This annual golf tournament raises needed funds to assist service members and their families during times of physical separation and financial hardship; we are so grateful to the local San Diego community for participating in our golf tournament to support our service members.”

The tournament featured a shotgun start and scramble format and included a number of standard proxy events such as men’s and women’s longest drive and men’s and women’s closest to the pin. Mulligan packages were available for purchase that included two mulligans, co-branded hats and drink tickets. After a round of golf, participants enjoyed traditional American fare, a silent auction, and live auction. The live auction offered high-end packages including a stay in Mammoth, a week in Rosarito Beach in Mexico, a Fujikura Driver Shaft & Fitting along with a Scotty Cameron 2018 Laguna Putter, a Rascal Flatts concert VIP package, and a Padres package including 4 game tickets and signed merchandise.

“We continue to be grateful for our partnership with UTR and the annual golf tournament. It was another beautiful day with our golfers and volunteers who are choosing to give back to military and veteran families at home and abroad,” said STEP CEO & Co-Founder Tony Teravainen.
