United Through Reading and Support The Enlisted Project (STEP) Host Joint Golf Tournament for Military Families

June 23, 2017

San Diego (June 23, 2017) – Today, United Through Reading and Support The Enlisted Project (STEP) will host a joint golf tournament at Salt Creek Golf Course, in Chula Vista, Calif., to bring awareness to and raise funds to support the organizations’ missions to support U.S. service members and their families.

Both military nonprofits are located in Southern California, which is home to the highest concentration of service members and veterans in the entire world. STEP provides active-duty and veteran families with financial counseling and financial grants through times of crisis, with the goal of achieving financial self-sufficiency. United Through Reading offers service members the opportunity to be video-recorded reading storybooks to children at home which eases the stress of separation for service member and child, maintains positive emotional connections, encourages early emergent literacy and language skills, and cultivates a love of books and reading.

“United Through Reading and STEP teaming up to support the men and women in uniform who sacrifice their country is a huge win for San Diego’s military families,” said Dwayne Junker, retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander and current member on the United Through Reading Board of Trustees. “It is a special occasion that brings those together who have a passion for serving our military. We look forward to this event being the first of many more collaborations.”

The tournament is open to the public; the fee to participate is $99 per individual. In addition to the golf scramble, participants will hear stories from both organizations’ beneficiaries, have the opportunity to win live and silent auctions items, and will be sent home with golf-themed giveaways.
