USAA Volunteers Bring Joy to 15,000 Military Children
August 5, 2025
April 2025 marked a milestone of impact and heart, as United Through Reading and USAA joined forces in honor of Month of the Military Child. Across eight USAA campus locations—including Dallas, San Antonio, Chesapeake, Charlotte, Colorado Springs, Phoenix, and two Tampa offices—something extraordinary happened: 15,000 books and 15,000 bookmarks were prepared by passionate volunteers to be delivered to military children both here at home and at overseas duty stations. Six hundred fifty of the books prepped at the San Antonio campus went to Freedom Fest at Joint Base San Antonio. Some of those recipients told us they were so excited to see that we offered bilingual books!
This incredible effort reflects more than just numbers—it’s a testament to the power of community, compassion, and corporate responsibility. From packing books with care to ensuring every bookmark could serve as a reminder that storytime knows no distance, USAA employees showed up in full force to support the youngest heroes connected to our nation’s service members.
But the magic didn’t stop there.
USAA also recorded 90 heartfelt storytime videos to be featured on United Through Reading’s Spotlight Stories, available on the UTR app. These stories—read aloud by volunteers—help bring a familiar, comforting voice into the lives of military children separated from loved ones due to deployments, trainings, or frequent moves.
We are incredibly grateful to Jeanah Guerra, Senior Corporate Responsibility Manager, and her CR team for planning and executing this impactful event. A heartfelt thank you to USAA’s Chuck Bunch, Military Affairs Relationship Director, for sharing his powerful story of staying connected with his family during deployment through United Through Reading. We also deeply appreciate Lisa Johnson, Project Management Director, for being one of the many dedicated USAA volunteers who helped bring this campaign to life. Your collective efforts prove that when we unite for a cause, we can light up the lives of thousands of children, one book, one story, and one smile at a time. Together, we’re sharing the gift of storytime and celebrating the resilience of military kids everywhere! To view photos of the events, click here.
