At United Through Reading, we place tens of thousands of children’s books into the hands of military families each year. But before those books arrive at events and homes around the world, there’s an important step in the journey — they get stickered.
Each sticker invites families to record a story and connect with us. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference. And when you’re preparing nearly 100,000 books a year, that “small detail” adds up quickly. Thankfully, we don’t do it alone.
For more than a decade, an energetic volunteer group known as Off Your Rockers has been serving the San Diego community through hands-on volunteerism. They’ve supported incredible organizations like San Diego Food Bank, Promises2Kids, Wreaths Across America, and Empty Bowls San Diego. Their philosophy is simple and inspiring: choose service opportunities that spark joy, build connection, and create space to enjoy one another’s company while making a meaningful impact.
Many of the Rockers have deep military ties, including Ellen Williamson, who spent 36 years working for the military. When the group discovered United Through Reading, they immediately recognized a new way to support military families — one that blended purpose, camaraderie, and a whole lot of fun.
Since October alone, the Rockers have stickered an incredible 12,500 books for UTR. And true to their name, they’ve turned every volunteer session into a friendly competition filled with laughter, teamwork, and the kind of positive energy that makes the work fly by.
“We love that people donate books to UTR, and we truly enjoy the camaraderie we experience while stickering them,” Ellen shared. “It has been our honor, privilege, and joy to volunteer with United Through Reading.”
We couldn’t say it better ourselves, and we are so grateful to this amazing, fun-loving group for all they do for UTR and military families.
The Rockers’ enthusiasm, generosity, and commitment ripple through every book they touch — and in time, into the homes of thousands of military families.
