Behind United Through Reading’s mission is a great community of volunteers dedicated to helping military families stay connected. This month, we’re celebrating Stefania Hengel, and her passion and commitment to our community. We invite you to read her story below:
As a military spouse of 15 years, I’ve always looked for ways to give back. I’ve volunteered with the Red Cross in Italy, done pro bono smile makeovers at a dental office, and found ways to feed my community. Two years ago, I began volunteering with United Through Reading (UTR).
As a mother of two young sons, I quickly realized how difficult it would be to maintain a sense of normalcy when my husband was deployed—especially during bedtime, our special time together. My husband used the UTR app to record himself reading our boys’ favorite books.
These videos changed everything for us.
Each night, our sons would sit together, completely focused, listening to their dad’s voice as if he were right there in the room. Sometimes they laughed at the same parts they always had; other times, they talked back to the screen, answering his questions or saying goodnight. Those moments brought comfort and stability into our home during a time that could have felt overwhelming. They reminded our sons that their father was still present in their lives, even from far away. For me, it eased the burden of trying to fill both roles and reassured me that our family’s connection remained strong.
I’m thankful for the impact UTR has had on my family. Volunteering has been a meaningful way to share my passion firsthand with fellow military families.
