Summer Olympics Reading Challenge
July 2, 2024
Get ready to go for gold with our Olympic-themed Summer Reading Challenge! Just like athletes train for their events, young readers can exercise their minds and imagination through eight exciting reading activities. Complete three events to earn a bronze medal, five for silver, and all eight for the coveted gold!
Reading during summer break is crucial for children’s educational development. Studies show that students who don’t read over the summer can lose up to two months of learning progress, known as the “summer slide.” Our challenge helps to prevent this by keeping young minds active and engaged with books.
Each “event” in our reading Olympics qualifies for a different goal, encouraging children to explore various genres and literary experiences. We’re sure these activities will broaden horizons and spark creativity! Completing events qualifies readers for a media. The more events they complete, the better their chances of taking home the Gold! Print our Medal certificates to celebrate the achievement.
Beyond academic benefits, summer reading fosters a lifelong love of books. It allows children to dive into stories at their own pace, free from school pressures. This relaxed approach can help reluctant readers discover the joy of getting lost in a good book. Use our reading trackers to log the total books read this summer for those looking to challenge themselves and earn multiple medals.
Parents can support their young Olympians by participating in the challenge and discussing the books together. Remember, every page turned is a step towards the podium! So, grab your books and let the games begin! Every child can be a champion reader this summer with determination and imagination. If you need ideas for titles to match the qualifying events, browse our extensive book list.
